It’s the final countdown

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Well, the time to return to campus is getting closer and closer, which has me seriously buckling down. I’ve been working at tying up the loose ends with the Pleiad Web site, looking hard at my goals for the Pleiad this fall, and finishing up my stint as a freelance reporter with the Sanilac County News.

For a change of pace, I’m going to begin by talking about the ending. Of my time with the Sanilac County News, that is.

Yesterday was my last Marlette City Council meeting, at least for the summer. I was a bit surprised to find that I was saddened by that fact. Though I enjoyed the reporting, I hadn’t realized how much I had become interested in the goings on in that neighboring town. Yet I kept catching myself thinking about what I expected from the next meeting before I’d remind myself that I wasn’t going to be there.

That kind of investment in my beat and the fact that it was completely unintentional on my part really went a long way to tell me that I’m headed down the right path. If it were just a job to me, a way to collect a paycheck,  I doubt I’d really care about what Marlette chooses to do about the fact that there are too many weeds in one person’s yard.

As far as the Pleiad goes, I’m really looking forward to this fall. I’m happy (for the most part, the perfectionist within me will never be fully satisfied) with the redesign of the site. We’re going to face a few obstacles, like the fact that we are currently two editors short. But I have a few ideas for dealing with those obstacles, as well as just improving the quality of the reporting and the experience for those on staff. So look for new and exciting things this fall!
