Job Interview

On Saturday I had my first post-graduation job interview at Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. My interview was by phone. Although I have participated in a number of interviews, I have actually never completed a “job” interview by phone. I was slightly nervous and discovered halfway through the interview that I said “um” way too many times, but the interview still went very well.

The most important thing I remembered about an interview is that you stay excited about the job while speaking with the employer. Even though I said “um” a few times, because I stayed positive and excited about the possibility of working for them I secured a follow-up interview. Unfortunately, this interview will be conducted by phone as well. But, now that I have been through the experience once, I was able to note the things I did wrong as well as the things that I did right. Now, on Friday, when I have my second interview, I will be better prepared than the first.

What is most interesting about this job interview, is that it is in politics. While my interest in political science started in high school, I always considered it as more of a hobby; even though my major has changed while I have been at Albion, my minor, Political Science, has remained constant. When I started my job search, I was looking for jobs in Public Relations or Event Planning. However, when a professor recommended me for this position, I decided that because I do love Political Science I would look more into it. Now I am really glad I did.

Although the job is not what I thought I would be doing when I graduated, I can actually still envision myself working there. It will be interesting to see where the interview on Saturday and the rest of my job search takes me throughout the semester.
